STUDEBAKER STARTER INFORMATION


STARTER FROM M SERIES TRUCKS WITH CHAMPION MOTOR. IT IS MOUNTED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE TRUCK. NOTE THE BENDIX ENGAGES THE FLYWHEEL FROM THE BACK SIDE.


STARTER FROM CARS WITH CHAMPION MOTOR. IT IS MOUNTED ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE CAR. THE STARTER PICTURED IS FROM AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CAR. THIS IS THE SOLENOID SIDE.

THE PINION GEARS HAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF TEETH (9)AND AN OUTSIDE DIAMETER OF 1.125 INCHES.

NOTE THE NOSE PART IS ABOUT THREE INCHES FROM THE MOUNTING FLANGE TO THE TIP TO ALLOW THE BENDIX TO ENGAGE THE FLYWHEEL ON AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CARS
THIS IS TRUE ALSO FOR SIX VOLT V-8 CARS ALSO


V-8 12 VOLT BENDIX PINION GEAR
TWELVE VOLT PINION GEARS HAVE (9) TEETH AS WELL BUT THE GEAR DIAMETER IS ONLY ONE INCH
THIS MAKES THE TWELVE VOLT BENDIX PINION GEAR "FINER" THAN THE SIX VOLT UNIT
THIS IS THE REASON THEY CAN NOT BE INTERCHANGED
THE CENTER SHAFT DIAMETER IS ABOUT .450 INCH
THE SIX VOLT SHAFT MEASUREMENT IS ABOUT .600 INCH

The photo above shows 3 Studebaker Starters (12V). They can be identified by the length of the snout. The housings are the same. The 3/OD Starter "can" be used in a 4-speed car. The 4-speed Starter can be used in other manual transmission cars- . The Automatic starter cannot be used in any Manual Transmission car- and vice-versaa. I HOPE THIS IS HELPFUL IN DETERMINING WHICH STARTER YOU HAVE. OVER THE YEARS SOME ITEMS ARE REPLACED AND WORK FINE BUT THEY ARE NOT ORIGINAL TO THE CAR
